CHATEAU GUIONNE - CUVEE RENAISSANCE 2002

A complete, well-balanced and harmonious wine. This merlot-dominated wine has been made with care and passion, and will age well.

CH. GUIONNE Fût de chêne 2002 *

Owners since 2000 of the lovely house which dominates this vineyard, Alain and Isabelle Fabre offer two different styles ; the "Fût de Chêne" (matured in wood) is prefered for it's intense fruit, it's oakyness and it's strong tannins.

The "Cuvée Renaissance" 2001 is more mineral, with more wood, and can be drunk fairly soon, perhaps with a stew.

Selection 2004
CH. GUIONNE Fût de Chêne 2001 *

A beautiful 50 acre vineyard, where the new owners have selected just 5 acres to make this wine. The chalky, limestone, South-East facing slopes, are planted almost equally with Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine is rich crimson in colour. The nose is delicate, and elegant. Smooth and fruity, with plenty of tannin, this young wine, full and round, will benefit from a little ageing, and can then be drunk with red meat and cheese.

Côtes de Bourg 2002
CHATEAU GUIONNE ****
(Cuvée Renaissance)

Guy Goldstein : purple ink, full, smoked ham, blueberry, tarragon, cedary, notes of vanilla on the finish.

Crystl Faye : very turbib, inky purple, heavy cedar and blueberry, cassis with tar notes, very hearty fruit, berry, blackberry and bold firm tannin. For someone looking for New World.

Troy Weissmann : opaque, modern style nose with cassis, earth and jammy black fruit, a bit watery on mid palate, medium finish, good effort and good value @ ten dollars +

Andrew Bell : ruby red, inky, deep ripe inky fruit, massive, powerful, inky cassis, dry tannin, ageworthy.

Just three years ago, Alain and Isabelle Fabre left their native Languedoc, and their Corbières vineyards to settle in the Côtes de Bourg at Château Guionne, fired by their ambition and their talent. Profiting from the chalky limestone soil, with its sand and silt, as well as the expertise of Michel Rolland, they limit the yields and opt for quality.

With the "Cuvée Renaissance 2001", the bet is about to be won. The nose ! The aromas of dark fruits are immediately evident, and are quickly covered with an elegant touch of vanilla. On the palate...velvet. It starts with pure, concentrated fruit, and develops rich and elegant, closing beautifully with sophisticated tannin and fruit.

Colour : superb deep crimson.

Nose : somewhat closed to start, but then opens with waves of rich sweet dark fruit, finishing with a light smoky touch.

Palate : full and smooth from the beginning, this rich wine opens with elegant notes of blackberry, with delicate young tannin, still showing the fruit. A noteworthy rich and meaty finish with a little cherry. A full wine.

Château Guionne "Cuvée Renaissance" 2002

Again a special mention for this wine so full of promise. The nearly-opaque colour is deeply impressive. The complex aromas show without fault ; everything is clear, with remarkable intensity ; the fruit merges faultlessly with the ageing, whilst a certain mineral element flows through.
The whole is well-balanced, and harmonious. A full, elegant wine with breeding, and good potential for ageing.
